Recognized as an Outstanding Teacher

National Honor Roll is pleased to announce that Melissa Brumbaugh has been accepted as a member of the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers for 2005/2006.  NHR’s Outstanding American Teachers recognizes educators who have made a difference in their communities.  Hillary Corey, a senior at Towns County High School, nominated Ms. Brumbaugh.  Hillary was a student in Ms. Brumbaugh’s sixth grade journalism class as well as in her tenth grade biology class.  Ms. Brumbaugh who teaches technology at Towns County Middle School will appear in the NHR Outstanding American Teachers 2005/2006 Commemorative Edition.

“The service teachers provide to society cannot be underestimated,” says publisher Lynn Romeo.  “Our goal is to recognize outstanding teachers for their contribution to the positive development of America’s youth.  We cannot thank them enough for all that they do.”  National Honor Roll congratulates Melissa Brumbaugh on being chosen for this special honor.

The Best Students Name the Best Teachers

A select group of America's teachers are being honored by their toughest critics--their former students in the 9th edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers (2004-2005).  Former students of Melissa Brumbaugh have nominated her as one who has shaped and inspired their current achievements.  Class of 2004 Towns County High School graduate Adrianna Perdomo, Class of 2005 graduate Ashley Hyatt, and TCHS junior Hillary Corey nominated Ms. Brumbaugh, which makes it three years consecutively for her to be given this honor.

Students were requested to nominate the one teacher from their entire academic experience who made a difference in their lives by helping to shape their values, inspire interest in a particular subject and challenge them to strive for excellence.

TCMS Technology Connections

You are about to use some very high-tech computer tools in the Towns County Middle School Technology Lab this school year.  These tools are essential to success in school and at work.  You may be wondering whether or not you will be able to understand and use these tools.  Don't worry.  Instead, think about this:  At first, no one was sure if scientists could build spaceships safe enough for travel to the moon.  These space pioneers gave their best efforts and worked through problems step-by-step.

2009 - 40th Anniversary - On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon and took their first steps on the lunar surface. Half a billion people around the world watched live television images that recorded the event. The landing was, without a doubt, one of the most significant achievements of modern civilization.

By taking small, steady steps, space scientists took a giant leap forward and created technology that helped all mankind.  Just like the space scientists of the past, you must always take the next step forward.  They never gave up.  Don't you give up either!  Learn a lesson from their example.  If you give your best efforts and take things one step at a time, you, too, can accomplish great things.

For all 6th grade students and the 7th/8th grade students who were unable to take Keyboarding last year, the major focus for the 2009-2010 school year will be learning proper techniques in keyboarding, which is an important lifelong tool.  No matter what your career path may be, keyboarding is an essential part of making sure you are successful.  We will also focus on learning to navigate the Internet using research tools to narrow our searches.  Knowing the computer hardware as well as how to maintain our personal computers inside and out can be helpful because of viruses, spies, and spam.

TCMS students who were successful last year in learning good techniques in Keyboarding class will have the opportunity to work with and learn the basic features and shortcuts of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher.  They will also learn about good design rules and techniques for the documents they create.

The Internet continues to change our lives, from how we go to college to how we stay close with cousins.  One day, you may globe-hop, keying URLs for websites in Boise, Bogota, and Bangkok and hyper-linking to Bydogoszcz, Bulawayo, and Berlin -- all before lunch.  As a capable keyboardist with Internet connections, you will have the world at your fingertips.
